COURSE DETAILS
The Songwriting Course with Davide Shorty – Rhymes & Beats between Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz guides you step by step through the construction of a song, from the initial inspiration to the final mix.
Each lesson combines personal experience and musical practice , showing how to start with an idea, develop it with rhymes and melodies, and transform it into a finished piece.
Through the analysis of pieces like Cervello in fuga and Amare me, amare te , Shorty shares concrete exercises: taking daily notes, working on the rhythm of words, looking for effective images and experimenting with the beat.
Central to this is the use of writing as a tool for getting to know and telling oneself , capable of giving shape to complex thoughts and feelings.
The course includes freestyle, beatmaking and recording sessions, up to the creation of the song Nuova Forma and a focus on sampling and production techniques.
A course that offers clear and practical tools for writing authentic lyrics, curating the musical part, and creating complete songs.
START NOWThe first lesson opens with a performance of the song "Bravello in fuga ," used as a starting point to introduce the course. Shorty immediately introduces his approach to songwriting, demonstrating how writing becomes a means of sharing personal experiences and transforming them into music.
The context in which Brain Run was born is explained: the decision to leave Palermo, the move to London, and the collaboration with Coral. Shorty emphasizes the importance of taking constant notes, cultivating ideas and rhymes to stimulate daily creativity.
The analysis delves into the details of rhymes and assonances. Shorty demonstrates that perfect rhyme isn't always necessary, but rather a balance that creates sonic continuity. His method is based on instinct, flow, and the ability to connect concepts and images.
The autobiographical nature of the lyrics is explored, from family relationships to moments of personal transition. Shorty describes writing as journaling, a way to process experiences. The desire to make the song a universal narrative, interpretable by the listener, emerges.
Introduction to the song "Amare me, amare te ," created with Feng Shui Project. Shorty discusses the context of the tour, the collaboration with Nutty Dub, and the birth of a song that reflects a healthy love, based on self-care and inner balance.
The performance of the song highlights intimate and poetic images: a train journey, memories of shared places, reflections on personal growth and authenticity. The chorus emphasizes the inextricable bond between self-love and love for others.
The analysis reveals how the text was born out of spontaneity and awareness, combining autobiography, freestyle, and the pursuit of powerful imagery. Shorty delves into the work on rhymes and word rhythm, demonstrating how writing becomes a tool for self-analysis and liberation.
Through references to Foreign Exchange, Shorty explains how external influences have shaped his writing. The lyrics explore themes of ownership in relationships, mutual growth, and overcoming ego, crafting verses that reflect a mature, shared love.
In the final section, Shorty emphasizes the therapeutic aspect of the song. "Loving Me, Loving You" becomes a stream of consciousness capable of reflecting common emotions, generating a profound impact on listeners, despite having initially been conceived as a personal and intimate expression.
The creative process behind a new song is shown: from choosing royalty-free samples on Splice to building the beat and melody in Logic. Shorty composes and records highly personal verses, highlighting the importance of immediate flow and experimentation.
The lesson focuses on finding the perfect chorus to complete the song. Shorty explores melodic and lyrical ideas, experimenting with rhymes and images related to self-love and spiritual rebirth. The central theme becomes the cyclical return of life in new forms.
The editing and mixing phase of vocals is covered, with a focus on doubles, harmonies, and effects management. Shorty explains how to construct a cohesive chorus, taking care of technical details and sound choices. The lesson concludes with a listen to the complete song "Nuova Forma ."
The final episode focuses on beatmaking and sampling. Shorty discusses the process of recording a jazz band live, working with the MPC, and using drum breaks, parallel EQs, and analog effects. The lesson concludes with an unreleased verse as a farewell to the students.
