COURSE DETAILS
William Stravato 's "Pentatonic in Contemporary Guitar" course is an in-depth journey into the universe of pentatonic scales , exploring their possibilities beyond traditional use.
Starting from its historical origins , the course shows how this scale is present in many musical cultures and how it was used by classical composers before becoming a mainstay of rock, blues and jazz .
The different harmonizations are addressed, explaining how to obtain major, minor and altered pentatonics , applying them to complex harmonic progressions.
Advanced fingerings are covered, from vertical display to horizontal and diagonal fingerings on the neck, to three-note-per-string configurations, useful for more fluid and dynamic phrasing.
A central aspect is the use of the pentatonic scale in modal contexts , combining it with chords to emphasize specific melodic tensions. Space is given to modal interchange, use in melodic and diminished minor scales , and applications in turnarounds and 2-5-1 progressions.
The course offers a practical approach for those who want to develop expressive and personal phrasing , expanding their musical vocabulary with versatile and effective tools.
START NOWThe pentatonic scale has ancient roots, well before rock and blues. Claude Debussy was fascinated by it after hearing Javanese and Balinese orchestras at the 1889 World's Fair.
Pentatonic scales are derived from the degrees of the major scale and can be major, minor, or altered. Using chord extensions allows you to apply multiple pentatonic scales to a single chord, expanding your melodic and harmonic vocabulary.
The melodic minor leads to pentatonics with specific alterations, creating more pronounced tensions. The seventh degree is often used as an altered dominant, and choosing the right pentatonic allows you to emphasize these tensions in the harmonic progression.
The diminished scale allows you to build four altered pentatonics, corresponding to the dominant seventh chords contained in the scale. Their sound, particularly tense and bluesy, is useful for creating tension in advanced harmonic contexts.
Pentatonic fingerings influence phrasing. Alternative patterns such as 2-3 or 3-2 for pairs of strings are explored, and wider intervals are experimented with to achieve a more expressive and varied sound.
Complex harmonic sequences are analyzed and pentatonics are applied that emphasize specific chord extensions. The use of altered pentatonics on stretched chords generates a more articulated and sophisticated sound.
Building triads within pentatonic scales allows for new harmonic shapes and exploration of different voicings. First and fifth degree pentatonic scales are combined to create richer melodic solutions.
Overlapping pentatonics on different chords allows you to exploit modal interchange to create new melodic tensions. Using pentatonics on different degrees of the scale offers multiple expressive possibilities.
Alternative approaches to visualizing pentatonic scales are explored, such as horizontal configurations, diagonals, and three-note fingerings per string. These patterns help make phrasing more fluid and creative.
Pentatonic scales are applied in a more rock context, using a chord sequence designed to emphasize harmonic tensions. The focus is on the ability to quickly switch between scales to create more dynamic phrasing.
The entire Western musical system is based on tension and resolution. The concept of 2-5-1 and turnarounds is explored, applying altered pentatonics on chords.
