DETTAGLI DEL CORSO
Hand Technique in Jazz is a comprehensive video course designed for drummers who want to master the fundamental techniques of jazz drumming and develop an authentic, personal sound. Ruben Bellavia, an internationally experienced drummer who studied in New York with masters such as John Riley and Greg Hutchinson, shares practical methods and teaching strategies refined over the years.
The course offers an in-depth exploration of the French grip, essential for controlling speed and dynamics through finger movement, and the traditional grip, a must-know for anyone aiming to play in the style of marching bands and historic jazz drummers. It then delves into push-pull motion, an advanced technique that enables drummers to tackle fast tempos and the intense accompaniment often required in big band settings.
A dedicated focus is given to the stickings of the great jazz masters: Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Kenny Washington. Understanding the hand combinations used by these drummers means uncovering the stylistic identity that makes their solos and grooves unique, turning technical practice into true musical expression.
The course includes exercises on pad and drum set, practical applications on swing and bebop tunes, hand-foot coordination work, and reflections on finding the right balance between technique and creativity. Each lesson integrates theory, demonstration, and practice to help build solid foundations in jazz drumming—always keeping the ultimate goal in sight: playing with musicality, control, and personality.
